Is buying a home worth it?

We talk all the time about the financial benefits of homeownership. And yeah, those are great - but what people don’t often talk about are the emotional benefits of owning a home.

That’s what we’re going to talk about today, so let’s get into it!

1. You can personalize your space.

When you own your home, you get to decide what you do with it.

You can paint the walls, decorate it however you want to, give your backyard a makeover, and so much more without a landlord coming over unannounced to snoop through your stuff and make sure you aren’t growing weed in your closet (I know, I know - it’s legal in California. Your state laws may vary!).

The point is, you can do anything you want to make your home more comfortable and more you…without having to ask permission first. And that’s a freeing feeling.

2. There’s a sense of accomplishment that comes with being a homeowner.

The journey to becoming a homeowner is a tall mountain to climb, so there’s a sense of accomplishment that comes with achieving such a huge goal.

Owning your own home can make you feel more safe, settled, and secure. You don’t have to worry about your landlord selling the home and kicking you out, or raising your rent. You’re in charge, and it feels good.

3. You gain a sense of community.

For me personally, my area in Pacific Beach has a wonderful sense of community.

Forming relationships with the people you live near and the other parents your kids go to school with allows you to gain a sense of pride in your community.

It’s a huge benefit if you live in a neighborhood where people are out walking their dogs, neighbors throw parties in the community, and events are always happening. Different communities really have their own personalities, and you get to decide which one resonates with you.

For those of us in San Diego, we know OB, PB, and La Jolla are three very different communities, even though they’re all within walking distance. Just like El Cajon is going to be different from Rancho Santa Fe which is different from San Ysidro.

Everyone has their own personality, cultural preferences, and a sense of what we want and need in a community; so, the sense of community that you get when you own a piece of the area is my favorite non-financial part of owning real estate.

For all these emotional benefits, is buying a home worth it?

I say absolutely!

If it fits in your budget, works with your timing, and is beneficial for your unique scenario (as I always say), buying a home has so many benefits (financial and non-financial) over renting.

If you’re thinking about buying a home, make sure you keep these quality-of-life benefits in mind!
