How Do You Choose a Realtor?

“Every time a bell rings, a new realtor gets their real estate license.”

Wait, that’s not right. But that’s what it feels like! 😆

(P.S.: Can you name the Christmas movie that inspired that quote? 🎄)

A home is one of the biggest purchases you’ll make in your lifetime. Most buyers jump into house hunting with a list of must-haves for their new home – but they often don’t put the same effort into finding the right real estate agent for the job.

The ease of acquiring a real estate license has led to a surge in the number of agents, each claiming to be the best in their field. With so many choices, finding a talented, experienced real estate agent can be difficult.

So, I’ve put together a guide to help you navigate the waters and choose the right realtor for your needs.

Let’s dive in!

Consider Experience and Local Expertise

First, you’ll want to consider the experience of the agent or their team – especially in selling homes in your specific area.

For instance, in a place like La Jolla (in San Diego), most residents prefer agents with extensive local experience. On the other hand, if you're a first-time buyer open to different locations, an agent with experience in a wider range of areas might be more suitable.

The key is to align the agent's expertise with your real estate goals.

Prioritize Consistency Over Quantity

Don't be swayed by agents boasting the highest number of sales. Instead, look for consistency

An agent who consistently sells at least one home a month over several years is often a better choice than one claiming to sell hundreds annually. A more modest but steady track record can be indicative of personalized attention and reliable service.

Look for Someone With the Heart of a Teacher

Avoid agents who communicate in a condescending tone or use excessive jargon – because let’s be honest, nobody wants to deal with that. Instead, seek out an agent who has the heart of a teacher.

Ask yourself – Do you feel completely comfortable asking them questions? Do they anticipate your needs? Do they offer both expected and innovative solutions?

You want someone who prioritizes listening, understanding, and meeting your needs over closing a deal.

Find a Personality Match

The agent's experience and expertise matter, but so does your personal connection with them.

Remember, real estate transactions can be lengthy, and you'll be interacting with your agent often. Choose someone you vibe with; someone whose call you look forward to receiving.

Personal compatibility is key in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable process.

Interview Multiple Agents

Do not hesitate to interview multiple agents! This includes being open to telling friends or relatives that you might choose a different agent. A true professional will respect your decision and support you regardless.

My own experience in professional real estate has taught me to always celebrate my friends’ and family's milestones, even if I wasn't their agent of choice.

Selecting the right real estate agent is a critical step in your property journey.

It requires balancing their experience and expertise with your personal comfort and needs (both are equally important!)

By considering these factors, you can navigate the sea of agents and find one that not only meets but exceeds your expectations in the real estate market.

Remember, the right agent is not just about closing the deal; it's about building a relationship that supports your goals and dreams.
