Today, we’re going to talk about one of my favorite topics.

How do you choose the best real estate agent for you?

When you’re interviewing a real estate agent (or CPA, attorney, loan officer, or whatever), there are a few key things you want to consider.

Consider Experience Level

When it comes to a real estate agent, you don’t necessarily need the person that has sold the most homes. You just want to see that they’ve sold a good number of homes and that they’re a full-time professional that does this day in and day out.

Every single deal is unique and comes with its own pitfalls, and until you’ve been through that ringer a few times, it’s hard to anticipate a client’s needs in each situation.

So, look for someone with a good amount of experience that’s passionate about their job — not necessarily the area’s #1 salesperson.

Look for the Heart of a Teacher

You really want a real estate agent that has the heart of a teacher, not the heart of a salesman.

Dave Ramsey talks about this all the time — when you’re sitting with someone and you start getting the feeling that they’re just trying to sell you something or trying to persuade you into a certain direction, that’s not the kind of person you want to partner with.

You want someone who is going to educate you on the marketplace, teach you what the process is going to be like, set proper expectations, and describe to you what they’re doing to help.

If you get out of a meeting with a real estate agent or any other professional and you didn’t learn anything, it’s probably a good idea to keep looking.

Think About What Your Goals Are

What I see so many real estate agents and other professionals do when I’m sitting down with them as a consumer is trying to convince me why they’re going to be the best choice for the job.

They start talking about themselves. They’ll say, “I’ve sold this many houses, and I do this and this and this”.

Okay, but what about me and my unique situation?

I’m not saying talking about your track record and accomplishments is a bad thing, but you’re really looking for someone who is more customer-focused. They should be focused on you, your goals, your personality, your risk tolerance, your timing, and your financial situation.

Pro Tip of the Day

Today’s pro tip is to interview multiple people to find the right fit for you.

Not only are you looking for someone with a solid track record, the heart of a teacher, and a client-centered focus — you’re looking for a personality fit. Someone you can be completely comfortable with and trust.

If you can check all these boxes, I think you’ll find a lot of success out there!
